My students are from a rural area. Our district is made up of 7 small towns. We have more than 50% of our school on Free or Reduced lunch, so our poverty level is fairly high. These kids don't let their home life play into their school work.
For as young as these kids are they have some great perspective.
Even though I teach 4th grade, it can sometimes feel like I have a classroom of much older students. They push me to be the best teacher I can be.
These books use sports to show how young kids can overcome life's problems. They also expose kids to different kinds of sports, not just your "typical" sports like football, basketball, and baseball. They help expose kids to all sorts of other avenues for them to be athletes. The series also includes books written specifically for girls. They help to show girls that they can be successful in sports, and gives them a strong female character to emulate. These books are a fairly quick read, and will help some of my reluctant readers to find a series that they enjoy reading, and keep them wanting to read more!
