Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom are from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Most of them do not have ideal support systems at home. In the past five years, I have seen some of my students deal with things no seven or eight year old should have to deal with. Obviously, we do have many amazing, caring families, but most are low income and cannot provide their children with any extras.
Despite all of this, my students are the most accepting, kind, fun, and positive children I have encountered in my teaching career.
They are eager to learn and genuinely appreciate having new, exciting experiences in my classroom.
My Project
My goal, along with my colleagues, is to expand our classroom libraries to include a variety of books that represent our students' diverse community, with characters and stories that they can relate to.
It is imperative that we instruct our students on the value of inclusion, acceptance, and empathy.
Building up my classroom library with books that promote diversity, will allow students to see representations of themselves in the books that they and their teachers, read each day.
We need to build classroom libraries that honor all people and also, help our students to become educated about and accepting of diverse groups.
