This year I am teaching a brand new class: Performance Poetry. Many students weren't sure what they were signing up for; however, they are finding they LOVE listening to and creating spoken word poetry. I am lucky enough to teach students who think creatively and are excited about learning and improving. It also makes teaching and developing the curriculum challenging. During all of the first quarter, I have relied on the materials and resources I have found online. Together we have learned what works, what their strengths are, and what we need to do to help them continue to learn, grow, and improve.
Many students use the resources available to them to create art. They write poetry on their phones and they create images on their tablets and laptops. However at school we lack the ability to print their masterpieces in color to hang in the classrooms and hallways. A color printer will excite them and ignite new life into their creations.
Students create from experience and examples.
By providing my students with a wide range of examples from which they can draw the best ideas, I am hoping they will see how they too can weave their words together in order to share their art with others.
