My Students
As a bilingual speech language pathologist in a low income district, my students often lack exposure to various life experiences. For example, most of my students have never visited a zoo, traveled to a major city, or visited the beach. In addition many of them are learning English for the first time. I find that colored visuals and creating hands on crafts and books help them learn new vocabulary and keep them engaged. I also provide services to students enrolled in social communication classrooms and providing colored visuals is so important for them to assist their language development.
The colored images and materials will facilitate my students' discussions at home about new vocabulary and information learned during speech therapy.
My Project
Providing my students with a color printer will allow me to print out colored pictures of unfamiliar items and places. Many of my students do not have crayons, markers, glue, pencils, etc at home. My students can use the printed colored images and materials to create picture books, artwork, signs, graphs, etc. during speech therapy. My students can then bring their creations home and discuss them with their families. This discussion at home will help them carryover the language skills worked on during speech therapy sessions
These materials will help my students visualize and discuss the world outside their immediate neighborhood.
