This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students at my school are considered to be from areas with the lowest socioeconomic status. They often come from single parent households. Older students have the responsibility of helping raise their younger siblings. They do not have the funds to purchase reading materials. Students are lacking in basic reading skills and are several years behind when it comes to reading levels. Finding materials that interest them is a challenge. These students need encouragement to read about current and interesting topics that they have interest in!
My Project
As a reading teacher, my job is to improve reading ability in struggling students. Students who read fun and entertaining books show vast improvement. This project would add beloved characters and stories that will boost reading ability in students who do not have means financially to get their own books.
Students also love to write about their favorite adventures they read about.
Students who write in vivid ink (pens and computer ink requested) can express themselves and thus creating the desire and skills to improve writing. Writing and reading go hand in hand to create better students and improve literacy.
Some books I am requesting are: The Encyclopedia Brown Series, Skippy Jones and more.
Literacy is a life long skill that is essential in life. Help me build my students' literacy so they will be successful in life.
