I have 25 wonderful Kindergarten students who love learning and being in school! We are a learning community where each child is a teacher. In order to meet the needs of all of my students, small-group work and 1:1 teaching is extremely important. I am always trying to rethink our classroom space and materials to allow for the most engaged learning.
My students come to school every day with smiles on their faces, ready to tackle academic and social challenges.
They have grown so much since September, and I am so proud of their development!
My Project
Revitalizing our classroom's pretend play area will allow for different structures and levels of play. My students adore using the dramatic play area during Choice Time, and will be able to invent more elaborate scenarios with these new additions. The new kitchen furniture will replace an old set that is broken and missing parts. The rest will be brand-new to the classroom and allow the kids to explore more pretend-play scenarios. For example, adding a dress-up rack means we can unpack and display a box of costumes that is often ignored, as well as adding new costumes: chef, construction worker, doctor, fire chief! The pillows and play tent will be used to create a cozy nook to incorporate into pretend play, or as a quiet space for kids to rest and take a break. The workbench has a small footprint but will open up a new area of dramatic play in addition to the kitchen, which is currently the only furniture in that area. This will make the center appealing to a broader range of children. Similarly, adding play money to the cash register and more play food makes for more options -- playing restaurant, supermarket and more!
My kids use the pretend play area to express themselves creatively, work and play collaboratively, and practice important social skills like sharing, cooperating, planning and executing their ideas as a team.
These new materials will allow them to do all of these things in a more organized, efficient, and beautiful space.
