The cost of a cabinet and supplies to fill it--including crayons, markers, colored chalk, and transparencies--is $957, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
When I visit my friends who teach in suburban schools, it always makes me a little sad. The school halls at their schools are spotless; every classroom is perfectly painted; each teacher has a cabinet full of barely used crayons and markers.
At my school in Harlem, our halls aren't perfectly painted. I don't have a cabinet full of supplies. The few supplies I do have end up stolen because I don't have a secure place to store them. That means that when I want to do a creative math or science project for my seventh graders, I can't offer them nice markers or crayons. I have to ask them to do it in pencil.
For once, I would like my students to receive the supplies that suburban students get. For once, I would like them to be able to write their poetry and their science presentations and their mathematical research projects in beautiful colors instead of pencil. Each of my students has so much pain that he or she has endured and most live in homes void of color or joy. Shouldn't they be able to come to school and have a chance to finally express themselves creatively? I want to at least give them that.
I am asking you to help me in my quest to add color to the colorless lives of many of my students. I am asking for enough markers, crayons, and chalk to make sure that every student can express their creativity through color. I am also asking for staples so that I can display their work on a bulletin board. I am asking for transparencies so that I can have them make color presentations at the overhead. And finally, I am asking for a cabinet with locks where I can store all these supplies safely.
