This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is filled with future politicians, artists, scientists, and many other types of change makers. We are a small public school, serving mostly Black and Latino students, most of whom qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school, located in the heart of Harlem, is a part of NYC's renewal process, and all of us - school leaders, teachers, families and children - are eager to transform our school into something special. Our students are imaginative and filled with a love for learning.
These future change makers need your help.
An investment in our projects is an investment in these students' futures, and the future of our community. We are a school filled with smart, compassionate, and energetic people, ready to make a difference in our community and the world!
My Project
Do you remember your favorite book as a child? Could you picture yourself right inside the story?
Unfortunately, there are far too few children's books featuring characters of color.
In fact, research shows more books were published featuring talking trucks or animals than kids of color! Our school serves 99% Black and Latino children. This year, our 5th grade classes are mostly girls. These books feature a variety of amazing real and fictional Black girl protagonists like Michelle Obama, Mae Jemison, and Dyamonde Daniel. Putting these books in our library will tell our girls that their stories matter and they have the power to write their own stories, too!
