I teach fourth grade in a very diverse urban setting. We are a K-8 school with about 800 students. Over sixty percent of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Fifty percent of my students speak another language at home. Many do not have computers at home to enhance their learning.
We are an inclusion school, which means we have students in our classrooms with special needs, primarily students with autism. Because of my skills, training and experience, I often have students with autism in my classroom.
During class, when I need to print something for my students I have to leave my room, walk around the corner and down the hall to retrieve it from the printer. Many times it is not there. I either have to go back to my room and send it again or call the office and have someone track it down. This takes away from teaching time, is a distraction and can reduce the impact of a teachable moment.
Purchasing a color printer and ink cartridges will enable us to do two things. First, it will allow me to print copies in my classroom, saving time and keeping the students focused on the lesson.
Second, a color printer would be a useful tool for my students and allow them to use color. Many times color is needed to highlight specific information, show graphs and charts. In addition, the use of color in a project can be highly motivating to a student. Just as in life, not everything is black and white.
Your help will ensure that my students are able to join the twenty-first century technology age and add color to their learning and classroom projects.
