Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

ABLE is a transition program that serves students through our local high school district with moderate to severe disabilities. Our program specializes in teaching functional academics, community-based instruction, job/ vocational skills training, and recreational activities to ensure that each student makes a smooth transition from high school into the community. We strive to show students, their families, and the community that our students are capable of successfully participating in the workforce with appropriate support, modifications, and practice.

This project will fund adaptive tools such as paintbrushes, scissors, grips, and a tabletop standing desk.

Our students, the ABLE Artists, will use these supplies to create vocational art. Often times, our students have physical impairments and/or struggle with their motor skills. The tools in this project will help our students when they are creating artwork. For example, students who cannot squeeze traditional scissors will have the option to use adaptive scissors. Students who create best while standing, will have a space in the classroom where they can do so using the tabletop standing desk. Students who cannot grip pencils and paintbrushes, will have the option to use large egg grips or paintbrushes with large handles.

The skills and lessons we practice while utilizing these adaptive tools will also support a variety of job skills, life skills, motor skills, and academic skills (such as planning, measuring, ratio, proportion, drawing, advocating, and more). In addition to developing these valuable skills, it will also encourage our students' creativity and expression!

Thank you in advance for considering supporting our classroom and the ABLE artists.
