I work with amazing students with autism. We have three girls and five boys. They range from ages 5-7. Most of our students are non-verbal and communicate through the use of sign language or pictures. All of our students come out of district; they take special transportation to get to school. Some of our students ride in the cab for at least an hour at a time. They all come from different cultural backgrounds. By the time our students come to school, they're already exhausted.
Our students need specifically designed instruction to help them with their social, functional, adaptive, cognitive and social skills.
Our students use velcro daily; our students don't use worksheets to learn. Our classroom couldn't function without the use of velcro.
My Project
I teach students with autism in a self-contained classroom. Our students learn through adapted materials. Our students don't use worksheets to learn. They require hands-on activities, adapted and creative activities to help them learn and grow. Visuals and velcro are used in everything we do, from creating adapted books, to communication book, to file folder activities. Velcro helps us create creative activities and lessons for our students so that they can access the curriculum and learn better.
Velcro is also used in our students' communication books, work tasks and their visual schedules.
We have a limited amount of money each year to spend and it's all spent on velcro dots and strips. Our class is running low on velcro and once we run out we are not able to create activities and work tasks for our students. Thank you so much for supporting our students!
