This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." - unknown.
I teach my students to believe in succeeding, to believe in themselves.
In my classroom, I strive to inspire daily. The power of education is limitless. My students are the future.
My school is located near a large military base, and although many students come to me from diverse backgrounds, they always have one thing in common, an eagerness to learn.
Approximately 547 children attend my school and identify mostly as Multiracial, Black, non-Hispanic, and Asian. 100% of the students here receive free breakfast and lunch. We are also a Title I school with at least 40% of a school's students coming from low-income families.
Our school is a well maintained school with a loving, caring administrator, as well as teachers and support staff who do everything within their power to see that the needs of the students are met.
My Project
Adapted books enable students to physically manipulate parts of the story while reading. I will use the cardstock and Velcro to turn the simple literary texts I have requested, into learning tools that students can manipulate. The literary texts I have requested cover a broad range of Common Core skills that are essential for first grade students to master.
My students will use these adapted book sets to share their knowledge and ideas about what they have read.
For example, after reading a text, students will retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story using picture cards attached to velcro. Visual cues will enable students to better verbally relay the sequence of events within a text. From there, my students will extend their learning by creating a written retell of the story.
Donations to my project will help us create a place where our students can be comfortable and engaged while accessing the wonderful world of reading! By adapting books it will help open up a world of communication for students to collaborate and learn on a daily basis.
