Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are highly motivated, resilient learners! They are an active and bright group who come from diverse backgrounds. Truly, it inspires me that they show up each day ready to learn and grow.
This classroom is a kindergarten and first-grade blend.
This provides them the opportunity to be role models for each other, and the challenge of developing self-sufficiency skills.
Our home is a Title I school in Oregon. Our enrollment at any given is around 600 students. All of these students have free or reduced-rate lunch, 59% are Ever English Learners, and they may speak one (or two, or three!) of the 11 languages present in our school.
My students meet my needs as a teacher every day by being engaged, curious, and adaptable. My goal is to start meeting their needs better by recognizing that the methods in which they learn best by vary greatly. Some of my students prefer flexible seating options, some are verbal processors, others are fiercely independent and want to finish group work by themselves! I am looking for the tools to meet my students where they are, and help them form their best learning habits.
My Project
Teaching in a blended classroom provides unique opportunities and challenges. Our students are learning self-sustaining skills every day while individual focus switches between grade-level instruction.
Flexible seating will be used to make students feel like our classroom belongs to ALL of us, not just the teachers.
Headphones will be used to facilitate a quiet and calm classroom environment while one group works independently and the other receives intervention.
Some of our students feel more comfortable in our school than in their own homes. Our ultimate goal is for our space to be adaptable to their needs, and inviting to learning.
