Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school serves a very tight-knit community of families in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Our school was started by grassroots initiative of mothers who wanted a quality local education for their children when schools were being closed in their area. Students come to school each day ready to learn, and with a variety of social-emotional, linguistic and academic needs.
My students are curious, artistic, thoughtful and caring.
They excel when exploring their identities and expressing themselves through arts and experience-based learning. We thrive to support these diverse learners through an approach that develops the whole individual, which includes arts-integration, expeditionary learning, personalization, and a focus on social and emotional growth.
My Project
Our school has an annual tradition where one week during the school year, students are allowed to choose what they study. I am leading a clothing design and creation class where students organize themselves with local non-profits to design and create clothing for the non-profits and to sell their products in our community.
Throughout our week, students learn how to sew, logo design, tie-dye t-shirts and canvas bags, screen print t-shirts and market their designs and products.
They will work in groups based on what local organization they are most interested in to design a logo and create attire. At the end of the week, students will sell their crafts out in the community to raise money for the organization they've been focusing on.
Students will also work to build websites and learn to set themselves up as online vendors in order to build entrepreneurial skills. This will allow people to make orders for products via the website and will serve as a way to spread our project to a wider audience. All proceeds go to the non-profit organizations with whom we work!
