Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As I’m entering my fourth year with the students at M. Elementary, I have learned about their community and their needs coming into the classroom. My students come from a low income/poverty community in which there is little support from their neighborhoods. Around 97% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. There are many barriers both students and teachers are faced with as these students walk through our doors. My one goal in the classroom is making students feel comfortable.
For the upcoming year, I look forward to increasing the resources that we have in the classrooms to keep all students engaged from the use of flexible seating to having comfortable headphones while working.
We have a diverse population as well as a diverse group of learners. To be able to give students choice and options in the classroom with their learning, it allows them to feel like they have responsibility and ownership in the choices they make in their education Providing students with additional seating options and additional resources would benefit their learning each day.
My Project
The materials requested would make a difference on my students’ daily academic achievement and ability. Students’ walking into the classroom will have opinion in how they learn best and what helps them to be a pro active learner. At times, students sitting at their desks all day long just doesn’t work. Allowing them to be able to sit comfortably on the floor with a lap desk allows them to be independent workers in how they choose what works best. Students sitting at desks can use bands to help them focus. In chairs having seat cushions would allow them to wobble around at their seat for students who need support in learning. Providing students with balance balls to sit on at a table to do their work is also a great option for them.
Giving them option allows them to have independency and accountability in the classroom.
This would provide students with an active outlet without disrupting their learning as well as others. It also will make students more actively engaged in the classroom. For me, I look at this as a new way in the classroom to contribute to providing students with positive choices and increased development of academic focus and social skills.
