I work with a great group of 1st graders that come in each morning full of energy and ready to experience the world. Our school is an open-design, Title I school. Students are chosen via lottery from all portions of the city which allows for a mix of socioeconomic levels to be represented. Despite the challenging home life that some have, students learn to value one another.
I believe every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and accepted in my classroom.
We do community circles and other community building activities to help accomplish this. Students also learn about life skills like caring and honesty and how to put those skills in use.
Many students say their favorite part of the school day is recess, and anytime I tell students we are going outside for a lesson the excitement level rises. I’ve already been looking for ways to take learning outside this school year and the more we go out the more my students ask to go out again.
Having plastic clipboards, a manual pencil sharpener, hula hoops, playground and soccer balls, and cones for my students will allow for more opportunities to get students outside and moving.
We can maximize our learning time as students are active and learning.
Many of the items requested will serve a dual-purpose. Hula hoops will be used for hula hooping, but they’ll also be used for number bonds, Venn diagrams, and making giant bubbles. Plastic clipboards will allow students the opportunity to incorporate literacy, math, and science into outdoor learning.
