My 5th and 6th-grade students are Alaskan Natives at a Dual Language Enrichment School. They love to blend their culture with learning and they all use school to help improve their community. These children are the most dedicated children I have ever met and I would like to share the world's opportunities with them because that is what they deserve! They are the happiest, most energetic students you will ever meet.
They Yuraq three times a week to keep connected to their roots.
They go on subsistence food hunts and gatherings to help support their families. They teach their younger siblings and most importantly, school is the safest place for these children to test who they want to be as people and how their culture and learning can help.
My Project
My students are Alaskan Natives and their culture still relies heavily on subsistence living. That means that people of all ages hunt, gather, and process the majority of their food and household essentials to ensure survival. My students are used to ice fishing, musk ox hunting, yuraq, Native Youth Olympics, berry picking, and egg hunting.
Their culture had survived because of their commitment to adaptability and movement.
Their history is shared through group dance and drinking. Stories are told using the whole body. Because of this, my students like top learn academics through movement as well. These wobble stools will allow these students to create movement in the classroom so they may stay focused, limit distractions for their peers, and excel academically.
