Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sitting all day is a tall order for anyone, let alone active junior high students. So it's not surprising that when we discussed what they needed to make this year successful they unanimously agreed it was alternative seating. Our STEAM driven science class is built on collaborative investigations and engineering projects, so I could see how these changes would help them move and work together.
Each of my students has a diverse set of needs. Some of our learners are challenged with disabilities or language barriers or a combination of both. Some are dealing with issues at home or in their neighborhood. Some are just adjusting to being a teenager. All bring a sense of wonder and creativity when we talk about science. Watching them create this project, discussing each others needs and researching the best solutions for everyone has been a great experience for my class.
It's their hope and mine that adding alternative seating will give them a chance to move, providing an outlet for their energy and allowing them to focus.
This project will increase their success in science, by making them more relaxed and comfortable. Because this is a problem they identified this project has increased their ability to advocate for themselves as learners. I am very impressed by the empathy and logic that they used to develop this request, and I hope you are too.
In Their Own Words
Imagine begin stuck in a chair for 6 or 7 classes a day. Imagine being asked to sit down a lunch too. As kids we are asked to be still and focused all day. We're asking for alternative seating to help us move and be focused at the same time.
We are excited to have our opinions heard and get a say in our classroom. As students we do not get much control of our day, like when we go to the bathroom and what we do. We are requesting seats to help fix a problem we have found in our own class and solving it for ourselves.
This project will help us move and be comfortable. The cushions and stability balls will help us focus on the science experiments and projects by letting us move a little without disrupting other groups. This way we can spend our time learning about science and not trying to get comfortable.
