My 4th graders are enthusiastic, energetic, and ready to learn! They approach each day with open minds and look forward to hands on learning. They attend a low income, Title I school where resources and technology are limited both at home and at school. For many of them, school is a safe place to escape the everyday hardships they face and truly be themselves. I only hope to provide every opportunity possible to encourage the importance of their education and personal growth.
My Project
Flexible seating? What's that?
Research shows that students who are given choices when it comes to where and how they sit in their classrooms are not only happier and more on task than their peers in the traditional classroom, but also have an increase in motivation and engagement which directly leads to increased physical activity, posture, and overall health!
I've chosen to make this switch to flexible seating in order to provide my students with the opportunity to choose an area in the room and position that will best support their learning style. I am asking for adjustable stools to offer as an option at my taller standing table for students who don't want to stand, as well as milk crates that will be covered to act as chairs at a lower table and can double as storage space to help provide some new flexible seating opportunities in my room! Dr. Seuss said, "Today you are YOU, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is YOUER than YOU," and I couldn't agree more! By providing these new options for seating, I hope to provide each of my unique students with a seat that will be conducive to their learning style while also creating a cooperative learning environment where students will make daily decisions and share the seating appropriately.
