Our Pre-K students attend an inner-city school in Memphis, Tennessee. All students are identified as coming from low-income families. Our demographics consist of mostly African American and Hispanic students. Many Hispanic students are immigrants and are English Language Learners. All of the students are screened and identified as being at risk before becoming eligible for our class. The 20 students with the lowest screening scores are accepted into each class. Some have special needs--physical and/or academic.
All of the students come to school excited about learning and accomplish incredible progress academically, socially, and emotionally.
They don't let their economic disadvantages and/or physical or learning disabilities prevent them from learning. I am filled with awe every year at the enormous strides my students make toward becoming successful learners. Their delight in learning is an inspiration to me and gives me the determination to help them in any way I can.
Stability ball chairs provide my students, who have extra energy, the ability to squirm without falling out of the standard chair. Research shows that stability ball chairs improve focus, penmanship, and posture.
Wobble chairs will allow my students the opportunity to sit and do work while also getting the physical stimulation that they need.
Some of the students also have poor core strength. Wobble chairs will help them build the strength in their core that is in need of development.
Many students have that extra energy that they have trouble controlling. There are many solutions and I would like to try some of them with my students. A weighted blanket helps students with ADHD or autism relax during nap time. A weighted vest calms a student and can be worn throughout the day. A variety of simple fidgets can keep a student's attention during a quiet time or a transition.
Please help these students reach their potential by giving them resources that address their sensory needs. We thank you for your time and consideration.
