My kindergarten students come to school every day eager and excited to learn despite many challenges some are facing. I teach in a low income/high poverty school in the inner city. 83% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students are English language learners. Diversity is recognized, accepted and promoted in our classroom and school.
The 5 best words to describe my students are curious, cheerful, determined, imaginative, and energetic.
In our classroom creativity, innovation, and initiative are encouraged and celebrated. Children are given time to explore, make related discoveries, and experience enriched hands-on activities. High expectation of learning is set for all my students in an environment that is honest, respectful, caring and safe for all.
I'm always looking for ways to reach all my students and provide them with the best kindergarten experience I can. Thanks to Donors Choose I am able to provide many resources my students would otherwise have to go without.
My Project
Kindergarten students learn through active exploration. By having experiences at an early age students will begin to develop of a love of scientific inquiry. With the Fairy Tale Problems STEM kit my students will be able to work collaboratively to design a house that can't be blown down, build a bridge to support three billy goats, and more. This kit will help bring familiar fairy tales to life through problem based exploration.
"To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past,” (National Science Foundation).
The engaging building centers will teach kids to look closer at real-life designs—and make original structures that use the same important elements! These centers will encourage open-ended building with hands-on manipulatives that invite students to build, explore and engineer.
Students will explore magnetism, motion and buoyancy—as they complete hands-on experiments and engineering activities!
This project will help prepare students for a successful future. STEM occupations are growing at a high rate. By giving students opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will hopefully develop a passion for it and maybe one day pursue a career in a STEM field.
