Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a school where 85% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. My students are aged 3-5 years old, and all have Individualized Education Plans. My students are curious, full of energy and life, and always eager to learn! They love learning new skills and are proud of their own successes and those of their peers. My ultimate goal is to give my students a positive learning experience in a school setting, setting the foundation for a love of learning, and a love of school.
Students learn best through hands-on experiences and through the process rather than always have to produce a product.
We are a classroom family learning patience, empathy, and acceptance for everyone.
My Project
I hope to provide my special education pre-K students with tricycles, helmets, and safety signs for our outdoor learning environment. Having tricycles and safety signs will encourage gross motor development, social skills, language, and communication skills while engaging in daily active play. Often students come to school with poor coordination and balance. Students often come from homes with limited space or limited opportunities outside the school day to fully engage in activities that will help develop their large muscles.
Providing students daily opportunities for active play with age-appropriate, gross motor equipment provides our youngest students with a foundation for developing a healthy, active lifestyle and an excitement for physical activity.
Students are expected to be still for most of the school day then go home to sit in front of a television or electronic device. This project will allow all my students access to tricycles and introduce them to safety signs that they will see in their environment while developing gross motor skills and coordination while learning to share and take turns.
Students can ride with peers, engage in pretend play with the safety signs, or play independently in daily active play. Students will use gross motor skills to pedal tricycles and work on their balance and coordination. Students will be encouraged to engage in cooperative play with peers in small groups. Students will be encouraged to use their communication skills to request items or to invite peers to play. They will learn turn-taking skills, problem-solving skills, and social skills to enter play with peers. Students will have daily opportunities to become more active with the tricycles on the playground which will help them remain focused on academic learning activities once back in the classroom.
