My school services over 700 Pre-K through fourth grade students. We are a high poverty area. My 24 first grade students; however, come to school everyday with a smile and a desire to learn.
My six year old students are often so excited about learning, they literally can't sit still!
Some kids have to move in order to focus their energy on learning tasks. That is why differentiation is the key to success! With the implementation of higher ordered state standards, compass evaluations, and state testing, the rigor and achievement levels have been raised. Through the use of differential seating, I'm hoping to meet the needs of every child in my very diverse, very active class! I truly believe all learners have the potential to be successful when given the right tools to get the job done!
My Project
My active students would greatly benefit from 4 wobble chairs and a standing desk. This project would provide my students with alternatives to traditional seating. As a teacher, I'm required to diversify each and every lesson I teach, to be sure every child is reached; however, I've noticed that not all of my students are able to give lessons their full attention, because their focus is on trying to sit still. This lack of focus can be detrimental to their success. The use of wobble chairs and a standing desk will take the focus off of being still and put it back where it should be, on the lesson! They will provide my active students with the movement needed to remain intellectually engaged in the lessons, which will ultimately lead to their success in the classroom!
