My students need a listening center and novel art materials including an easel with paper, brushes, painters, and magnetic letters to help them master reading and writing using the multi-sensory approach.
My students want to touch, move, listen, sing and become totally involved with our lessons, but they are challenged by limited mobility and coordination. The materials selected will assist them in reading practice (listening center) and writing (table top easel and oversize paint brushes).
The ten students in my classroom struggle with severe disabilities including autism, mental retardation or cerebral palsy and are between ages 5-8.
They love school and are excited about coming every day. We are located at a regular public school in a midsized city. Students represent diverse cultural backgrounds and many are identified with sociol-economic disadvantages.
My Project
Supporting students' success requires that we consider how they learn best. The resources requested take into consideration their need for a hands-on multi-sensory approach. With these materials, I will be able to provide activities that encourage students to touch, to move, to listen and to respond. The materials were selected with an eye to enhancing students' abilities and to help them overcome their challenges. My students require art materials in order to build upper body and hand strength necessary for writing. I've included an easel in the order because it will assist in developing proper posture for this skill, especially for my students with limited mobility. The variety of art materials will help build hand strength while increasing motivation. The balance board and hop along balls will allow a nice sequence of sensory experiences that will keep the students focused and engaged in learning. Thank you so much for considering this project
