Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I can do this fraction problem now!" These were words of one of my students last week. Being part of the learning process for my fifth graders is such a pleasure. Our school serves students in grades K-5 and provides rigorous academics, phenomenal teachers and a safe learning environment.
Our vision is to provide a happy, caring and stimulating environment where children will recognize and achieve their fullest potential, so that they can make their best contribution to society.
Our fifth grade is comprised of 141 hard working students, many of whom come from low income households and received free or reduced price lunch. Our class loves to listen to stories, enjoy movement and are fascinated by role play. Many are raised by single parents, others have modified curriculum to help with their learning gaps.
Having these elements in mind, allows me to create a warm and safe environment. Students have class pets and plants they are responsible for, affording them the experiences of ownership and responsibility. From the moment they enter the classroom I focus their potential and growth. We are a positive classroom always using creativity and personal responsibility as a path for academic excellence.
My Project
My students struggle with restrictive movement on rigid school seats. Studies show that 11% of children 4-7 have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2012, according to the CDC, this impacts every classroom. Our classroom will benefit from flexible seating!
However, as we learn what a 21st-century classroom should look like, we understand that seating practices should consider all students and abilities.
Therefore, these Hokki stools offer an alternative to traditional classroom chairs by allowing students to wiggle while doing their work. This small change to the students’ day can significantly improve attention span and concentration, which will increase knowledge retention.
