My students are a group of young adults who love to move! Recess is no longer offered in 8th grade, and they only have physical education for nine weeks out of the year. However, they are still kids! They spend the majority of their day sitting-this needs to change!
These students need a classroom that is more efficient for student-led learning.
This is a group of students who learns by doing. Therefore, dynamic seating will not only improve communication and on-task behavior, but it will increase their daily activity.
My Project
Students in my class have requested movement. Our classroom is one of collaboration, where students work together in order to learn. Students have expressed the need to have choice in their seats. They want to be able to move, stretch, stand, and wobble!
In other words, they want to DITCH their DESKS!
In our student-led classroom, these alternative seats will offer everyone an opportunity to move. After much discussion and research, students have helped me design a tentative floor plan incorporating these new seats. They have imagined four different areas of the classroom, each one would serve a different purpose. A section for silent reading and writing, a section small-group work, a section for large group work, and a section for me to conference with students. Each area of the room is comfortable and conducive to learning. They look forward to a classroom that is not only comfortable but more suitable for learning and working.
