Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at our school are dedicated to college and career readiness. College and career is emphasized at every turn. Students take advanced placement courses, dual credit courses, and prepare for the SAT.
Students get a lot of help and attention, BUT THEY NEED CALCULATORS.
This is a huge need at our school. Calculators are now allowed and encouraged on state testing, but the number of students with calculators is very low. Some teachers have purchased their own class sets to share with students, but I envision every student having access to a calculator.
My Project
Students have the opportunity to use calculators on their assessments, but calculators are not available to every student. Students need calculators to be able to practice and be ready on test days. Students learn functions and math facts and on test day, they are allowed to use calculators in order to concentrate on content. Calculators are particularly good for word problems where the emphasis is on the process and the multiple steps.
We need standardized, simple calculators to give all students the same opportunity to excel.
Students may use simple, four function calculators for testing. My vision is for students to be familiar with the calculators in order to do their best on test day.
