The students I serve are 7th and 8th graders who have specific learning disabilities that impact their ability to learn. Many are reading and writing much below grade level, which interferes with their academic achievement. They need direct instruction in reading, writing, and math with supports to improve these academic skills. They all have individualized education plans with specific goals in reading, writing, math and behavior.
I believe that every student that enters my classroom possesses an immense potential and passion for knowledge that cannot be overlooked by the obstacles that interfere with their ability to learn.
Their disabilities must not define the people they will become or the success they will see to fruition. They need a classroom that welcomes them to take chances, encourages them to do things that are hard, and embrace a love for learning that goes beyond the classroom. My students will become good readers with experiences in a classroom that is rich in authentic literature as well as technology to prepare them for high school, college, and career readiness.
My Project
Literacy skills are the foundation of achievement in all academic areas. This achievement is greatly impacted by the ability to read and write effectively. Through Donor's Choose, I am requesting a subscription renewal to Scholastic's Action magazine for forty students that I serve with a passionate mission to read, write and respond to text. These magazines offer the perfect motivation and make a school-home link connection because the students are each able to have their own periodicals to read and to take home to read to parents again. Implementing Scholastic- Action magazine, in addition to the intervention reading program I teach will offer unparalleled learning supplements. This will enhance my students' individual education programming in reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The print and digital resources will further help build a strong literature and technology-rich classroom, enhance literacy instruction and make a school-home connection with school with at-home student access.
