My 8th grade students are a diverse group of learners! Some have parents who have immigrated from all over the globe. Others are attending the same school that their parents and even grandparents attended! These students are growing as readers, writers, and critical thinkers. They are becoming more confident and taking risks on independent projects. I love watching my students grow into leadership positions and navigating various roles during group projects. More importantly, I love watching them collaborate with each other.
I love watching my students grow from novice writers to young authors.
My students in 8th grade English/Language Arts are craving authentic texts that reach them on their reading level. They are bored by our textbook selections. They are tired of reading about the 19th and 20th century. I want to give them real world stories straight from the 21st century world they are inhabiting! My hope is that using Action Magazine by Scholastic will bring interesting, important stories to my students, which will in turn inspire and encourage them to dive in to more challenging texts.
Authentic texts that are accessible to my struggling readers will help them find joy in reading!
