My students need an place to store their books. My students need a class rug to sit on. My students need a class set of exercise balls to practice motor skills.
Research shows that academic success improves when children are given the opportunity to move! Movement throughout the school day gives students an advantage in learning and therefore increases student achievement. My classroom is full of movement with a purpose in every lesson and content area.
I had the opportunity to loop with my students from last year.
I have students from all over the globe. I like to think of my classroom as a giant melting pot of learning. They love to learn new things and they love working with one another. We really are a team. My school is great, the principal has bought into elementary action based learning. Every morning each classroom is engaged in wellness through the Nintendo, dancing, and moving to their favorite tunes. The learning environment at the school is built on these guidelines for success: GREAT, Going above and beyond, Respectful of themselves and others, Enthusiastic about learning, Acting responsibly, and being Trustworthy.
My Project
Students will need the rug for the floor activities. Students need a place to store their books. which is why I have asked for a small shelf for the library. Students will use the exercise balls in place of their chairs! Have you ever seen students constantly fidgeting in the classroom or during a lesson? It's because they do not have enough opportunities to move during the school day. 3-2-1, is one way I like to involve movement and content into a lesson. The students in my class will be able to hop towards a friend and tell them 3 things about the lesson, 2 things they thought were interesting, and 1 question they may have. This is called movement with a purpose. 10-2 is another way. We may have a math lesson and need a break from all the learning. In order to synthesize the information, the students will learn for 10 minutes and talk for 2 minutes. If we are learning skip counting in math, we can use the exercise balls to make it fun. I believe in brain breaks for learning.
This project will benefit the students by increasing brain development through movement and exercise.
It will also help in decreasing the obesity rate in young children which is a growing epidemic in the United states. This project will create life long learners which is the goal of public education. I also believe I am creating the leaders of tomorrow. My students are very active and ready to help others.
