Acknowledging Community Power, Resiliency, and Action Through Murals
My students need mural paint for creating 3 different murals for their school community. Giving them access to a wide variety of colors will encourage them to express themselves in ways they see fit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are located in an urban lower income setting in the Downtown Los Angeles are. The school they attend is a smaller school with about 500 students. Most of our students are on free and reduced lunch and will be first generation college students when they graduate. I have approximately 30 students in each of my 3 beginning art classes. For many of my students this is their first art class due to the lack of opportunities in their pre-schooling experience. Being that the year is in full swing, we will be focusing on creating art that gives students a voice to express their concerns and opinions about issues related to community. This semester, I will exposing them to contemporary artists and artworks that are trying to create change in communities that share similar obstacles as Los Angeles
My Project
It is my hope that this project will have students think of themselves as agents and artist of change. I will have students think about the ways in which art can remember, appreciate and celebrate the community that has come before and surrounds them currently.
Although students know they bring diverse histories, traditions and practices into the school community, they have yet to really have an opportunity to express and share it with themselves and the surrounding Downtown LA community.
It is my hope that this mural project will allow students to see themselves as part of a vibrant, rich and resilient history or murals that exist in and around LA. Communities all over LA have used murals to express themselves, document stories, and remember important events and people.
It is time for the students at Camino Nuevo Miramar to share and represent their histories, stories, and dreams. I know that when the murals are finished the culture that is struggling to show it self will be recognized, noticed and visually shared!!
