My Students

A new bunch of children will be entering my room in August and I already know a few of them. But I know them: some have both parents, some have single parent families, some live with Grandma and Grandpa, some are wards of the State, some have Moms and Dads that work hard, some are the primary money maker, some just want to pay for the things they want, some want to pay for the things they or a sibling might need, they work long hard hours, they have homework to do, survival may be more important than graduating high school, some dream of college, some dream of joining the Service, some do not dream.

Our school is a rural Appalachian high school where the majority of the children are economically disadvantaged; in my actual classroom, 70% of my children are economically disadvantaged.

My philosophy of education is simple: every child has potential, every child has some intrinsic ability. I, as a math teacher, must find a way to engage that child, trigger a fire deep inside that will burn a lifetime. Will you join me??

My Project

We study logarithms in Algebra 2 and work problems. There are very few activities available for the children to actually see a logarithmic algorithm without a calculator or computer. We can actually take different substances and calculate the pH and determine whether the substance is acid or alkaline, by utilizing these probes with our TI Nspires and cradles. We can work across the curriculum with chemistry, physical science, biology and health sciences. At present, our science department cannot conduct such a scientific experiment. The children need the hands on experience, these children may work in labs and/or be the person determine information based upon data. They need the real life experience of seeing for themselves!
