My students love to read! They come from various backgrounds but they all share the love of reading. We need a variety of higher level books for my students to continue to grow. I have a wide range of books but I need more to challenge them. With the number of students in my classes, my higher level books are being checked out very quickly. Therefore, many are settling on easier books since that is what they can get their hands on.
My school is a true neighborhood school.
All students live within a 2 mile radius of the school. Some walk, ride bikes, skateboard or get dropped off by car. Approximately 25% of the students come from military families. We have an Anchor for Life program at our school to help the transition for military students moving. We also have 35% of the students come from low income families.
My Project
Students are in love with technology. They constantly want to be on their phones, listening to music or anything they can with electronics. Schools have also moved into using more technology.
Major problem we as teachers find is the lack of technology to facilitate our programs.
My students use Achieve 3000 daily. It is a computer based program which meets the students at their level. They are given reading passages on their level and then answer 8 questions at varying abilities. The students enjoy getting on the Chromebooks we have to work on raising their level. Our main problem is that I have 4 Chromebooks for 23 students in each class. It takes a long time to work through rotations to be able to use one. I would love to see one more added so instead of every 6 rotations, I can cut it down to every 5 rotations. This will allow them to get on the Chromebooks more frequently and get their reading practice. My ESE students could benefit even more by getting on more frequently to have practice on their level.
