Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You dreamed of being an engineer or painting the next Picasso. My classroom is were my students learn the joy and fun of science. Science is in every aspect of our life, yet most of them are at a loss for previous experience to cement the concepts. That WOW that's cool is what I strive for.
Our students attend a Title I charter school in Texas.
They live in the city. They're curious, intelligent and highly technological. They have grown up with their minds being stimulated twenty-four seven. Teaching them requires challenging them in ways they have grown up learning. They get excited about science with hands on activities. They begin to ask questions and wonder could they make a difference in the world around them. They are tomorrow's future.
My Project
In middle school science, you cover all the sciences. Keeping a student's attention and stimulating their curiosity is what it's all about. Some concepts, such as pH, are harder to understand. With the pH kit and the computer, the students can check their hand calculated experiments against a computerized reading, transfer it to the computer and create a graph of their information. I can tweak their interest by stimulating their brains the way they have grown up, electronically. The chemicals we are ones that we will use in the experiments, do explore physical versus chemical changes and properties of elements. Elements are taught in sixth grade through eighth grade. Sometimes, the change is extremely fast. If the student looks away for a moment to write a calculation, they miss the change. With the pH kit and the computer, they will be able to watch the experiment and calculate at the same time. The real time graph is a great way to reinforce the collection and analysis of data.
The more hands on projects we are able to offer the students, the better their understanding.
As Socrates stated, "I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think." By ensuring their excitement with learning,we can teach them to think about science in every aspect of their life. We can create a better tomorrow for all.
