This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a first grade teacher at a Chicago Public School. The school that I teach in, John T. Pirie, offers a wonderful program called Accelerated Reader. This is a great program that allows a student to read a level appropriate book and take a comprehension test afterwards. This program not only starts a love of books, it prepares students for standardized testing.
My school currently has seventy-three first graders, and most are underprivileged and have no access to books at home. Many of our students do not have a library card or even someone to take to the library. My school's accelerated reader books for first grade are very limited. Due to the lack of level appropriate books for first grade, many students will not complete the program successfully. If my school had the funds to purchase at least one hundred new books for the program, I would be able to match students based on level and interest. First grade is a time where the foundation for the rest of a student's academic career is built. When a child is offered the right materials they will have the opportunity to succeed.
