My wonderful kindergartners are between the ages of 5 and 7. For many of them, this is the first time they have entered a classroom, picked up a book, or explored music, art, and the sciences. They come to school with smiles on their faces and an eagerness to learn, but they also come from very different backgrounds.
Many of my students live in poverty, many are learning English as a second language, and many are immigrants and refugees from other countries.
Even so, my students come to school willing to take chances and grow while teaching their teacher a thing or two about how to better meet the needs of her students. They also show her how to view each day with open eyes and an open mind.
My Project
Kindergarten is often times the first experience many of my students have of going to school. It is a year of many firsts. Along with making friends, learning their letters and numbers, and eating lunch in a cafeteria, many of my students also experience the first milk spill down the front of their shirt, running at recess and falling in mud or ripping their pants, and even sometimes the occasional bathroom accident. It is inevitable to happen and therefore it is best to be prepared. Often times parents forget to send in extra clothing or may not have another set of clothes to send in for their child. The child then has to sit in the nurse's office waiting for someone to bring them clothes making them miss out on valuable learning and experiences.
The extra clothing will allow students the ability to grab clothing when an issue occurs and not miss out on valuable learning time.
Instead of sitting in the nurse's office for hours, the student can grab the clothing from the classroom, change, and be ready to learn in about 10 minutes. A students memory of Kindergarten should include playing with friends at recess and singing songs about the alphabet not remembering how embarrassing it was to sit in the nurse's office because they had an accident.
