Sixth grade can be difficult. The students in our district are starting out in a new school, with new teachers, as small fish in a big pond. They have to switch classes 7-8 times a day, rotating between 7 different teachers, remembering schedules, staying organized, etc. Not to mention all of the changes that come with that age group-- figuring out who you are, who your friends are, how to manage your feelings, etc. It's tough!
Through it all, I have found that though they may be struggling, sixth graders are still kids.
They are yearning to connect, and when given a positive, supportive, and engaging environment, they will thrive beyond their own expectations, and in spite of the other struggles they are facing.
My Project
Today's students are highly motivated and engaged by technology. Luckily, as a teacher of 70 different students of varying academic levels and interests, technology is the best way and ONLY way I can reach EVERY single student. A recent study from Cogent Education confirms "...it is very possible that the access to online resources and community gave the extra help needed by the low ability group and the in-depth exploration for the high ability groups." Having a class iPad would give my students these additional technological resources.
Technology is all about CREATING and CONNECTING, and this classroom iPad, Apple Pencil, and protective case will allow my students to do just that!
Sixth grade is the perfect age to start teaching students how to use technology to create something new and to connect with people around the world who can help them learn more and be better citizens. The iPad will be used as a literacy station in my room. The students will be able to use a variety of apps to create movies and graphics to explain their understanding of the novels we read, as well as connect with each other and students around the world through blogging about our books. Creating and connecting are higher level strategies in our classroom. Because they are interested and engaged, students are far more likely to achieve higher levels of learning through technology.
