This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in a large urban city. The majority of the class is entitled to free lunch. Our school motto is "It takes a Village" which will enable us to support one another and foster a safe and nurturing environment that encourages respect, responsibility, integrity, and an enthusiasm for learning and teaching as well. These values guide us as we work to provide rigorous engaging instruction that cultivates and promotes character building, enabling students to impact their communities in meaningful and positive ways. My first graders begin our learning day by greeting one another at the threshold of our classroom with a fist-bump, high five, handshake, or wave hi with an eye-to-eye smiling good morning! These first graders vary in so many ways from their height, academic ability, home environment, and their exposure to learning. I value the fact that each is a learner! My goal and challenge is to help, guide, and support these students to meet benchmarks and grade-level expectations in literacy, math, science, and social studies while sparking an unquenchable desire to learn, achieve, and succeed!
My Project
A word I often use with my students is "stuff!" With that being said we have need for an assortment of stuff that will support our learning. On a daily basis we use white boards to show our learning to the class, a partner, or to teacher and it's vital to have these dry erase markers for this process. The felt tip markers add an important flair when we correct or edit our work or that of a classmate. The desk name plates not only identify our desks in the classroom but they provide a resource right at our fingertips, plus students can distribute papers and folders to the right person. Also having the desk tag sleeves helps them last through the school year. Seat sacks support our organization and provide additional storage and these few will replace some that are quite worn (since our teacher last got a set several years ago).
