My students are curious, intelligent and loads of fun! They come to me with a variety of abilities, including Autism and Down Syndrome. Seeing beyond those labels, and providing opportunities for both academic and social growth, are critical components to my students' success.
Each of my students have a unique skill set and personality, and it's my job to show the world just what they are capable of.
In order to help my students meet their full potential, I have to promote an environment full of high expectations, encouragement, and lots of love. At Crockett Middle School, we are committed to inclusion and acceptance of all students, and strive to provide an educational setting where they can be successful.
My Project
STEM activities can be engaging for all learners, but especially for those whose brains are uniquely wired to see things visually. Many individuals on the autism spectrum gravitate towards activities involving science, technology, engineering and math because of their remarkable skill sets. I plan to use these materials to stimulate learning and boost confidence in my classroom, all while allowing me to provide new opportunities to model persistence, communication and collaboration with peers.
My goal is to create a space where my students can thrive by providing a hands-on, creative, problem solving environment.
Our scholars will be able to use manipulatives, like the Magna tiles, the Blocks & Blueprints Learning Center, and the Building Brick STEM challenge to stimulate creativity and learn principles of building and engineering. They can experiment with force & motion using the Create a Chain Reaction STEM kit, and will be introduced to coding with the LEGO WeDO 2.0 Core Set and the Coding and Computer Programming set of books.
Students in my classroom will have time each day to select from a variety of activities in our new maker space, all in the hopes of inspiring future interests and careers. I can only make this space, and these opportunities, possible for my scholars with your help. Thanks so much!
