Who wants to learn about roller coasters today?
I teach math for 9-12 graders covering subjects including Algebra, Geometry and Advanced Algebra. My students are mostly visual learners because many of them are English Language Learners or Special Education students. We are a small public school where students are required to gain acceptance to college before they graduate.
My students would love watching a two minute video clip of a roller coaster before learning how graphs represent the real-world. This kind of visual helps students to connect math with the real-world and to remember an experience.
Unfortunately, without an LCD to show a clip like this, my students are not able to learn in this multi-sensory manner. Moreover, I would be able to project problems that students are working on onto a wall. Then, I can make images bigger for them and model problem solving strategies. Furthermore, students will have a chance to learn using technology that is utilized in college.
I call many of my students "math haters." They do not see how math connects with their lives. Moreover, they do not feel as though they need math in college or in their everyday lives. I hope that by using pictures, photographs, video-clips and real-world math problems, students will be able to connect math with their world. Further, this will help them realize the importance of learning math for college.
Your help would ensure that my students have access to the visual stimulus that helps them learn best. By learning in this method, the world of math will open up to these students. They can connect math with their own life and see how important math is for any person who will be attending college. Furthermore, it would allow students to opportunity to learn like they will in college. We can learn using Power Points and by referencing websites as a whole class. This will make their transition to college easier.
