Accessible Reading Tech. - Helping All Students Access Good Books
Help me give my students and O.B.O.B. Participants MP3 players for them to be able to listen to audiobooks. These are tools to help all students access stories and build their reading skills.
The students in our school are special because they each come to school with a sense of community, family, and wonder despite the difficult situations or hardships they each have in their personal lives. I am amazed every single day, seeing the effort and dedication my students put forth. Homelessness, divorce, parent(s) in jail, gangs, abuse, lack of meals, or local shootings are sadly all too common with the population of children our school serves. Regardless of their personal home lives, they each deserve the same exposure and resources of children everywhere, including the more affluent areas of our city.
All students are special, but not all students are afforded the same resources or funding to help ensure they will have equal opportunities to meet the challenges of today and the future.
Our students are very interested in making a better life for themselves and their families at the age of eight. They have needed to grow up faster than their years to navigate a world that children are usually happily ignorant of. This knowledge has given them each an urgency to learn. They know that technology, science, and math will be keys to unlocking their futures!
My Project
I want my students to all have a way to access good books/stories. The books we read in class can be very difficult for a student. Many of my students are still over a grade level behind in reading. This makes it very challenging for children to understand even the questions from tests or curriculum work.
Oregon Battle of the Books is a statewide competition in reading and our students love participating and reading almost 16 each year!
The problem we have found with the O.B.O.B. competition is that the books chosen are very difficult for our readers.
In order to help all students have a chance to read the required books, I have purchased the Audiobooks for the stories for children to listen to. In class, students like to track along in the actual book's to see the words while listening. This has been great for them to listen along to the stories on our class's iPads, but the problem is they can't take those home. I am hoping to give them the ability to continue listening in the evenings, on the bus, or anywhere they wish.
