Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember all the times in school when you were unable to see what the teacher was sharing because you didn't sit right up front? A document camera can fix this issue for my second graders! By being able to project anything on the whiteboard, students can better access books, demos, and more!
My students live in what has been named one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S.
Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a common marker for poverty. Our charter school is more than a place to learn to read and write for our students, but an oasis within this dangerous area where they can learn, play, run, and be children while still feeling safe.
My second graders are as inspirational to me as I hope to be for them. Their enthusiasm for exploring and learning about everything around them just blows me away! We as adults often assume that 7- and 8-year-olds are not developmentally ready for complex thought and problem solving, but they continue to surprise me with their level of inquisitiveness and perceptiveness.
My Project
With a document camera students will have better quality of access to demonstrations, lessons, storybook illustrations, and presentations. I have experienced many frustrations with students not being able to see, most recently during a lesson on solid figures. I held up a wooden rectangular prism that came with our math curriculum and pointed to its faces, edges, and corners while students counted them. However, it became obvious to me that no more than the front three students were able to see what I was pointing at. Had I used a document camera, I could have demonstrated this procedure under the camera and have projected this real-time video-like image directly onto the board for all to see.
Another very common and applicable use for this device is to make books accessible to all students. By placing a book that I am reading under the document projector, all students will be able to see and there will be no more cries of, "I can't see the picture!"
I want to provide the best education possible for these eager second grade minds and due to the recent budget crisis in California, I am leaning on you to help provide what these children need to succeed.
