Accessibility in the Classroom with Chromebooks

My students need these touchscreen Chromebooks to assist with accessibility, curriculum and instructional tasks, transition planning, hands-on, interactive activities, text to speech options, and preparation for post-secondary planning.

My Students

My students have a significant moderate cognitive impairment and struggle with learning the general education high school curriculum. Their disability directly impacts the ability to learn at the same grade level as their peers. Many of my students are at risk and have limited or no access to technology outside of the classroom. The total population of students receiving special education services at our school requires differentiated instruction, hands-on learning strategies, and multiple ways to access the curriculum. Our school is located in a rural, northwest district of Jackson County.

My Project

Using the Chromebooks in the classroom will allow my students to gain independence while accessing the curriculum with a hands-on approach. They will have multiple options to extend their learning, access adaptive technology to use with core subjects as well as transition curriculum to apply for post-secondary services. The use of individual technology will allow each student to be more independent with academic and adult life skills. With minimal exposure to technology outside of school, having the Chromebooks in class will provide additional learning opportunities while addressing their strengths and areas of difficulty with learning and transitional activities.
