I am a Resource Specialist and work with high school students, grades nine through twelve. I provide academic support for students and help them access the general education curriculum.
The best part of my job is that I have the same students from ninth to twelfth grade.
Currently, I have 16 seniors and am excited to attend high school graduation at the end of the school year.
In addition to holding meetings, proctoring tests, and providing push-in support in general education classrooms, I provide academic instruction in an Academic Success class. In one class, I have eight students, and in the other class, I have 14 students and a TA. The students are thoughtful and inclusive. The older students act as a role model for the younger students. They are welcoming and emphasize the importance of work completion, self-advocacy, and test preparation. I am really proud of my students and the progress they have made over the years, and I want to provide them with the tools to be successful. I want them to have a successful high school experience and set the foundation for success after high school.
My Project
Currently, we have 15 Chromebooks in our classroom, however, we loan out several Chromebooks to students for handwriting and reading support. The school does not have extra loaner Chromebooks, therefore, students who need consistent access all day borrow the Chromebooks in our classroom. When Chromebooks are acting as loaners, we are unable to use Chromebooks to teach instructional lessons in our resource classroom.
Ideally, adding five Chromebooks to our classroom will allow several resource students to have consistent accessibility in their classes throughout the day as well as allow the students in Academic Success to have access to Chromebooks for assignment completion.
Students will be able complete smaller assignments and research information for longer projects. The Chromebooks will also increase student engagement and hopefully, in turn, create greater focus and increase work initiation and completion.
This project will not only reach my 28 students, but I share the classroom with another Resource Specialist who has 28 students as well. We will have the capability of providing five loaner Chromebooks and using our current Chromebooks during instructional time. This project will have a positive impact on accessibility and grades for students receiving special education services.
