In my role as a special education teacher for grades 5-8; I serve 28 students - many whose first language is Spanish. Some student’s families are from Nigeria, Nepal, and other faraway place. We are a school of immigrant families; of scholars, musicians, athletes and more.
I am grateful to have the opportunity to teach some of the most endearing, inspiring and eager-to-learn students in one of the most culturally and economically diverse neighborhoods in Chicago and the nation; where more than 80 languages are spoken among the community's residents - and my local neighborhood public school sits in right in the heart of it!
Learning a new language and adapting to a culture and environment can be a challenge - add to that a learning disability and the demands of the academics for a student with special needs and school can become especially trying.
However, as mentioned, my kids are always eager-to-learn, happy to meet the daily challenges, and willing to do their daily best to achieve their goals. They make me proud each and every day.
My Project
My students are diverse learners and come from very diverse homes where technology isn't always made available to them due to a lack of resources. Families in the homes will be able to further use these resources to communicate with the teacher and the school with regards to their child's academic progress and social emotional learning needs.
Having tablets at home will provide many opportunities for enrichment and interventions which will allow kids to access the school curriculum, complete homework, and work on technology assignments to improve their scores.
This will be a win-win circumstance for everyone involved ! !
