For a child with autism it is often difficult for them to navigate learning through traditional means. An IPad is a powerful tool for students with Autism. It is also a powerful tool for students who have physical disabilities that limit their abilities to participate.
I have eight students who spend most of their day in my classroom.
I also support 5 more from other classrooms in the school. All of my students have varying moderate to severe disabilities and range in grades from kindergarten to fourth grade. Our school is a Title 1 school and most of the students in our school receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast. My students inspire me every day to be the best teacher I can be. I take sign language class to meet the needs of my students who are hard of hearing. I am pursuing National Board Certification this year. I am a supporter of inclusion of my students with their non-disabled peers as much as possible to support their social, academic, and emotional growth. Most of my students have Autism, 4 of my students are hard of hearing, and three of my students have physical disabilities which limit their ability to participate like their peers. All of my students love school and love learning. Thank you for helping them!
My Project
My students need an IPad. I have two students who have difficulty accessing the Smart Board in my classroom because of physical disabilities. An IPad will bring the lesson to them, and enable them to participate using apps such as "Splashtop". For my students with Autism it creates a learning opportunity which reaches them and engages them. With an IPad I can create "Social Narratives" with pictures to help them understand how to navigate their school. This will give many of them the opportunity and the tools to be able to be more fully included with their non-disabled peers.
I have personally seen the impact that an IPad can make for a student with Autism.
I have also watched a documentary on 60 minutes about the research done which shows that IPads help students with Autism learn. My students deserve the chance to reach their full potential and more. By having an IPad in the classroom, this will give them the means. Please help me. Thanks so much.
