I have the honor of being the full inclusion support teacher at a dynamic, diverse, elementary school. Our school embraces a full inclusion model for all students. I support students with significant disabilities in the general education classroom.
My students are wonderful energetic, curious, funny, smart and resilient.
This project is focused on six second grade students with significant special needs including autism. All of the students are in general education classrooms with peers without disabilities. They are participating in the same curriculum but need supports to access the curriculum.
My Project
Our school follows the reader's workshop model. Key to this model is leveled classroom libraries and student choice. Students "shop" for books at their just right level. They choose the fiction and non fiction titles that intrigue them. The students I support are in the second grade but are reading at an emergent kindergarten level. I want them to have a wide range of books to choose from, just like their peers. However, our second grade classroom libraries do not have many books at the B-C-D level that my students need. The books purchased with this grant will go into four classroom libraries.
This project will help bring the joy of reading to my students by allowing them access to the district's reading curriculum and the independence of choice.
This project will allow their classroom teachers to have the tools to support their reading development in the same way they can support peers without disabilities.
