This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 12 8-to-9 year olds with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in a Title I Elementary school. Although some of my students have to deal with serious challenges (e.g. brain cancer, Autism, Intellectual disability, and/or PTSD), they all have a love for learning and want to do well in life! School is a safe haven of joy, personal development, and inclusion.
We celebrate inclusion in the classroom and throughout the school campus.
My ultimate goal for my 12 students is help each student gain the skills they need to communicate, and achieve, their personal and academic aspirations. We focus on teaching literacy through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Math literacy is also a keystone in my work with them.
My Project
Many of my students are reading significantly below grade level, and through having access to books via technology these students can not only develop their literacy but can read books without seeming different.
Students with special needs often benefit from access to texts that can be heard while they read along (via the text-to-speech feature); the iPad and Kindle Fires will help my students understand their books as well as how words sound.
Although many students may not know how a word looks in written text, they have often heard it before and know what it means. Using their prior knowledge can make them feel more confident in reading and in the classroom at large. The more my students feel smart and capable, the more they will engage in academics.
