Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching our district’s structured learning (autism) class. We use a special education online curriculum called UNIQUE. My students have difficulty learning new concepts using the general education curriculum. They have sensory issues that need to be addressed and they have difficulty learning through verbal instructions and interpreting social cues. They learn best by repetition and within a very structured setting. Visual support and multi-sensory hands on learning provides the greatest opportunities for my students to be successful at school.
My Project
My students try very hard throughout the school day and give me all of their effort. What helps them is having access to the Unique curriculum which was developed for students like mine. Unique is an online driven curriculum with visual and verbal support at varied levels. For this reason, my students would benefit greatly from having chrome books and iPads in the classroom. Also, since my students are upper level elementary, chrome books and iPads would give them the steppingstones they need to actively participate in secondary classes, STEM projects, and with coding. Due to different situations; such as Hurricane Harvey, my class has grown and we need the extra access to support each student to the fullest.
