"Give them wings so they can fly and roots to come home to..." AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national program that uses research based strategies and instruction to help underrepresented populations attend college.
The students in the AVID program are made up of populations traditionally underrepresented in college.
Most of them are low-income, ethnically diverse, and first in their families to attend college. Our students are the most diverse/low-income students in the state. We currently have over 150 students, grades 9-12, and are working to grow our program. These students are dedicated enough to give up an elective class each year to be in AVID. AVID provides them with practice in writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading methods that will assist them in honors and AP classes while in high school. It ups the ante for students who have college potential but are not traditionally students who choose or are chosen for higher level/rigorous courses while in high school. It provides them opportunities to visit area colleges, helps with test prep, college essays/applications, etc... There are tutors and teachers that help, but it is because of an incredible intrinsic motivation that it works.
My Project
The majority of the AVID student are from low-income situations and do not have ready access to computers. I would love to be able to build a classroom library, one laptop at a time if need be, to provide students with this resource. They need access to look up and keep up on their grades in all classes to be able to do their best and maintain the best GPA possible. Also, they are often in need of printing out assignments for all classes. I also want them to be able to look up important information. And lastly, as the laptop library builds, students would be able to check computers out for use at home.
This donation of a laptop will essentially be an incremental step in "leveling the playing field" for these underrepresented/under-served students.
They are used to working hard for everything they have and seeing the adults in their lives do the same. I would like to reward that effort with just a little help. Thank you.
